Welcome to the 2014-15 edition of The Liberal Arts Advantage, which highlights accomplishments of the past academic year in the College of Letters & Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
We publish our annual report each fall with the beginning of the new academic year. This year, we take you through our 167-year history — from a time when just 17 students studied in six departments, to today’s diverse college spanning languages, literature, writing, philosophy, mathematics, biological and physical sciences, social sciences, music and more.
We have changed and grown, but L&S continues to provide the well-rounded education our university’s founders first envisioned.
A world-class College of Letters & Science is critical to UW-Madison’s global standing as a research and teaching powerhouse. We are proud to call ourselves the heart of this great university, with more than 19,000 students from all 72 of Wisconsin’s counties, all 50 states (plus Washington, D.C.) and 79 countries.
Read our stories to learn how we are advancing research and knowledge and supporting our outstanding students while preparing them for life and work. You can browse our report using the Table of Contents navigation in the left column, read the magazine on Issuu or download the PDF version.
