Three faculty members from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders were recently honored with awards at the Wisconsin Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology Association Conference.

Professor Susan Ellis Weismer won the 2013 Kleffner Award, which honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions to clinical science and practice in communication science and disorders over a 20-year or longer period. In her research, Ellis Weismer, who is also Associate Dean for Research in the College of Letters & Science, investigates the developmental course and nature of language processing in atypical language learners compared to those with typical language development.

Clinical associate professor Amy Hartman won the Outstanding Service Award. Hartman’s clinical focus is working with deaf and hard of hearing children. Hartman has clinical expertise in the area of diagnostic audiologic assessment and hearing aid assessments and fittings for the pediatric population.

Clinical professor Joan Kwiatkowski won the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual for years of professional service to the field of communication sciences and disorders. Kwiatkowski's clinical interests include the treatment of children’s speech delays of known and unknown origin and the treatment of stuttering and other fluency disorders across the age span. She is an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association-board-certified specialist and mentor for fluency disorders.
