The College of Letters & Science is pleased to announce that Greg Downey, Evjue-Bascom Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) and the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), has been appointed associate dean for the social sciences, beginning May 26.

Downey joined the UW-Madison faculty in 2001 and has served as director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication since 2009. His research and teaching explore the history of information technology, geographies of communication, and new media.

Downey, a former computer systems analyst, holds bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois and another master's degree in liberal studies from Northwestern University. His Ph.D. is from Johns Hopkins University in history of technology and human geography. He has been a leader in teaching and learning on campus, winning the William Kiekhofer Distinguished Teaching Award and an Evjue-Bascom Professorship.

Downey, who also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Geography, is the founding director of the Internships in the Liberal Arts and Sciences program.
