UW-Madison climate scientists and cartographers have teamed up to create a new website that allows Wisconsin users to ask the question:
What climates today are most similar to the projected future climates at my location?
The website, www.wicci.wisc.edu/climate-map.php, helps us understand global warming and its potential consequences by providing contemporary equivalents for future climate scenarios.
This tool has many potential applications, including helping farmers identify crop types and hybrids that may do well in Wisconsin’s future climates, or to identify areas with species that may be poised to immigrate into Wisconsin.
This tool is a contribution to the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts (WICCI), which just released a report assessing the potential impacts of climate change on Wisconsin’s natural resources (www.wicci.wisc.edu).
The webtool development was led by Professor Jack Williams of the Department of Geography, Dr. Sam Veloz of the Center for Climatic Research, and Jeremy White of the UW-Madison Cartography Lab.
Additional support was provided by UW-Madison’s Climate, People, and Environment Program by Focus on Energy’s Environmental & Economic Research Program.
